Symposium was opened by academician A.I.Khanchuk. With solemn speeches were made by Deputy Prime Minister of the Sakhalin region S.V. Khotochkin, Prof. N. Maeno, on behalf of the International Glaciological Society, and Corresponding Member of RAS director IMGG B.V. Levin.
The symposium was attended by such famous scientists as Dr. Martin Shnebeli (Swiss Federal Institute for Snow and Avalanche Research), Professor Emeritus of Hokkaido University Norikazu Maeno, vice president of the Japanese Association of Snow and Ice Dr A. Sato, head of the geography of polar countries on AARI L.M. Savatyugin, professor of National University of Uzbekistan G.E. Glazyrin, deputy head of Glaciology Institute of Geography RAS, Ph.D. N.I. Osokin, Leading Researcher, Laboratory of avalanches and mudslides of geographical Faculty of MSU Dr V.N. Golubev, Head of Laboratory of Landscape Ecology Institute of Ecology of Volga Basin RAS E.G. Kolomyts.
With plenary speakers were Dr. Socratov S.A., Dr. Kazakov N.A. and Prof. N. Maeno.
The symposium was attended by 104 researchers from 46 organizations from eleven countries (19 - Russian, 27 - international).
The symposium was made 37 oral presentations, were presented 15 posters.
Presentations from staff of 28 scientific-research organizations (12 Russian and 16 foreign), including 11 institutions of the Russian Academy of Sciences, 6 of them - the organization of the Far Eastern Branch of RAS.
University science presented by participants from six Russian and 9 foreign universities.

The symposium was attended by representatives of leading Russian research centers Snow: Research Laboratory of snow avalanches and landslides Geography Faculty, MV Lomonosov Moscow State University University, Center for avalanche safety of "Apatite", Department of Glaciology, Institute of Geography RAS, the Arctic and Antarctic Research Institute, Laboratory of avalanche and mudflow processes Sakhalin branch of the Far East Geological Institute, and leading international organizations conducting the study of snow: International Glaciological Society; Japanese Society of Snow and Ice, National Research Institute for Earth, Hokkaido University University of Nottingham, Snow and Ice Research Center (Japan), WSL-Institute for Snow and Avalanche Research SLF (Switzerland); Institute of Tibetan Plateau Research Chinese Academy of Sciences (China).
Among the visitors of the symposium were representatives of organizations like Sakhalin SakhalinNIPImorneft, "Roshydromet", snow-avalanche team of Far Eastern Railway, SakhSU.
During the symposium, organized a round table on classification of snow, where they discussed international and a number of Russian classifications of ice crystals, as well as a number of other important issues.
Also consulted with Russian experts on the construction of facilities engineering protection from avalanches and snow drifts, the issues of cooperation with Japanese colleagues.
At the end of the symposium, Dr. Martin Shnebeli (WSL-Institute for Snow and Avalanche Research SLF) held a seminar for young scientists, in which he told about how to draw scientific papers for publication in international scientific journals.
During the field trip participants and guests attended the symposium Sakhalin Botanical Garden, east coast of the island, fish hatchery. Unfortunately, the weather spoil the participants only during the field trip, but this in no way marred the experience of participants of the symposium.
